Headhunting in the Republic of Colombia is one of the most contrasting tasks one can face. On the one hand, the country has very high economic potential, on the other hand, the country has been marked by armed conflicts for decades.
Especially in the 1980s, corruption and mismanagement increased. The dependence of the police and judiciary on political parties or the government favoured an undermining of the rule of law and the suppression of any opposition. The drug mafia, which was gaining power at the same time, saw itself threatened by US intervention in the local drug war.
After decades of armed conflicts between different interest groups, a peace process was initiated between 2016 and 2018, which was also supported by the United Nations (UN). Due to the long-lasting guerrilla wars, Colombia was the country with the highest number of internally displaced persons in the world until 2018. Added to this was the burden of refugees from Venezuela during the crisis of supply there.
Despite the armed conflicts, Colombia's economy has been growing continuously since the 1990s, making it the largest growth market in South America after Chile. Today, the food and textile industries play the biggest role. Colombia is generally considered to have great economic potential. This is due, among other things, to its advanced industrialisation and a large number of raw materials.
According to an assessment by the World Bank subsidiary, the International Finance Corporation, Colombia is considered “a positive example of financial stability and market reforms”. In the Global Competitiveness Index, which measures the competitiveness of a country, Colombia ranks 66th out of 137 countries (as of 2017). In the Economic Freedom Index, the country ranks 37th out of 180 countries in 2017.
