On the one hand, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a federally organised "constitutional monarchy" – in other words, a monarchy with a democratically structured constitution and separation of powers. On the other hand, each emirate is organised as an "absolutist hereditary monarchy" in its own right, so that the emirates are autocracies wrapped in a modern state garb. Therefore, it is not always easy to find who is responsible for what.

The International Monetary Fund classifies the UAE as a "high income developing economy", which has led to the fact that about 80% of the population (almost eight million inhabitants) are labour migrants. Thus, the United Arab Emirates have by far the highest proportion of foreigners in the world. In the Global Competitiveness Index, which measures a country's competitiveness, the UAE ranks 16th out of 138 countries (as of 2016) and in the Index of Economic Freedom 2017 even 8th out of 180 countries. The UAE is thus one of the most liberal economies in the world.

The UAE has the seventh-largest oil reserves in the world and is considered one of the most developed economies in the Arab world. This is why the country occupies a very pleasing 35th place on the human development index (as of 2019). However, this is also due to the fact that Islamic Sharia law, for example, does not play a significant role in the practical application of civil law – with the exception of family law.
